General Situation

Shanghai is one of the most developed areas for basic education in China. It owns 754 secondary schools and 764 primary schools, with the number of 1,322,800 students altogether. Meanwhile, with the further promotion of reform and opening-up, Shanghai has more international exchanges. Thus international students to Shanghai increase every year. By estimation there are 150 primary and secondary schools which could accept foreign students. They can choose to live and learn together with Chinese students.

Shanghai has more than 50 institutions of higher learning, from top-level institutes to smaller colleges, and is the home to some prestigious ones.

Fudan University

Founded in 1905, Fudan University is a famous multi-disciplinary comprehensive research university with a long history. It is under the direct jurisdiction of the State Ministry of Education, enjoying national construction priority. At present, she has 16 Schools, they are Schools of Philosophy, Journalism, International Relations & Public Affairs, Law, Economics, Management Sciences, Information Sciences & Engineering, Technological Sciences & Engineering, Life Sciences and Medicine. There are also 70 departments,69 undergraduate programs, 219 Master programs, 153 doctoral programs and 25 post-doctoral mobile stations. Additionally, the university has ten attached hospitals which combine medical service, clinical teaching and research. The university is attended by 39,795 students, 15,790 at the undergraduate level, and 8,235 at the graduate level. Nearly 3300 are international students.

Tongji University

Tongji University is the leading universities directly under the authority of Ministry of Education in China, included in the state-funded Project 211, the 21st Century Education Rejuvenation Action Plan of China. The history of the university dates back to 1907 when German doctor Erich Paulun established Tongji German Medical School; in 1923 officially named as university; in 1927 as national university which was a world famous comprehensive university with science, engineering, medicine, arts and law. In 1952, after the discipline restructure, Tongji became the largest and most complete engineering university in Chinese civil engineering field. In 1978, with the Reform and Opening approved by the State, Tongji quickly developed to be one multi-disciplinary university with the engineering orientation. Today, experienced more than 100-year history, Tongji has grown into a comprehensive research university with ten major disciplines, namely sciences, engineering, medicine, literature, arts, law, economics, management, philosophy and pedagogy.

Shanghai Maritime University

Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) is a multi-discipline university that encompasses such areas as engineering, management, economics, liberal arts and science, with special emphasis on shipping technology, economics and management. The university runs 2 post-doctoral research stations (Transportation and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering), 2 primary-discipline doctoral programs (Transportation and Communication Engineering, Management Science and Engineering), 17 subordinate-discipline doctoral programs, 13 primary-discipline Master’s degree programs, 57 subordinate-discipline Master''''''''s degree programs, 5 specialized Master''''''''s degree programs, 45 Bachelor''''''''s degree programs, and 12 associate-degree programs. SMU has a full-time student population of over 20,000 of whom more than 17,000 are undergraduate students and over 3000 are graduate students. Of the over 1,000 full-time teachers, 141 are professors and 46% hold a doctorate. SMU offers undergraduate programs, master programs, doctorate programs, Chinese language programs, pre-degree program, summer school program, international class program and professional training program. In 2013,there are more than 500 international students from 40 countries or regions across the world, including about 160 degree students and more than 400 students in long-term and short-term non-degree programs .

Shanghai Ocean University

Shanghai Ocean University(SHOU) has developed into a multi-disciplinary university focusing on the coordinated development in agriculture, science, engineering, economics, arts and management with complete disciplines and distinctive features. SHOU, which was Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School established formerly in 1912. In 1952, it became the first fisheries college, namely, Shanghai Fisheries College and was renamed in 1985 Shanghai Fisheries University. In 2008, it was renamed Shanghai Ocean University. SHOU has 2 post-doctoral research stations, 3 first-degree Specialties for Doctors, 21second-class Specialties for Doctors, 10first-degree Master degree programs, 43 second-class Master degree programs, 2 major degree programs in 8 realms, 46 undergraduate programs and directions, 10 higher vocational educations. SHOU has extensive foreign exchanges .As early as 1955, SHOU commenced to accept international students.

Shanghai Conservatory of Music

Founded in 1927, Shanghai Conservatory of Music was the first music institution of higher education in China. Nowadays the conservatory has established a solid foundation on different subjects such as composition, performing arts, research and technology of music and consists of 15 departments and 22 undergraduate majors and offers 28 graduate programs and 21 doctoral programs including the departments of Composition, Conducting, Musicology, Voice and Opera, Piano, Orchestral Instruments, Chinese Traditional Instruments, Music Education, Music Engineering, Arts Administration, Modern Instruments & Percussion, Music Theatre, the Institute of Digital Media Art, Academic Studies and Postgraduate Office, etc. The conservatory has the authority of Bachelor, Master and Doctoral Degree granting, and a post-doctoral station of Arts, thus forming a self-contained system with a complete curriculum of music and academic education.

Shanghai GanQuan foreign languages Middle School

Shanghai GanQuan foreign languages Middle School is a public school covering primary and high school education founded in 1954, which is an experimental and demonstration school in Putuo District. Since1972, our school has started Japanese teaching, enabling itself to be the largest old-line school among all these kinds of foreign schools. Therefore, GanQuan is known as "the cradle of learning Japanese".

"Specializing Japanese and multilingual development “is the feature of GanQuan. Besides English, Japanese and German as the first foreign language, French, Korean, Spanish and other minority languages courses are offered. Building an international school is our educational goal. The school has established sisterly school relationship with schools in different countries, such as Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Australia, Russia and other countries.

The number of student in our school is about 1700(including nearly 100 foreign students),faculties and staffs more than 200 people, and 7 foreign teachers(Japanese, that every foreign student can develop roundly and freely, foreign students department opened a series of basic courses and elective courses, such as Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) primary, intermediate and senior classes. Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English, Geography, Biology and other courses, as well as calligraphy, folk music, martial arts, and Chinese culture course.

What's more, we have Chinese family experience, short-term suspension travel and other rich and colorful activities. The school also offers individual tutorial lessons to meet the needs of students' personalized learning.

Foreign students’ department implements “the menu type courses, small class teaching”. Students can select the "learning in regular class" (with Chinese students) or" independent teaching" (with foreign students) according to their personal Chinese level.
